On 31 July 1995, Ibrahim al-Wazeer, publisher of the independent
newspaper “Al-Balagh”, was the victim of a foiled assault on his
home. Early in the morning of 31 July, a group of unidentified
individuals began planting explosives at the home of al-Wazeer.
The perpetrators reportedly fled from the house, in an eastern
suburb of Sanaa, after they accidentally set off one of the
explosive devices.
On 18 July, following an armed attack on the Sanaa headquarters
of the Union of Popular Forces Party (UPFP), the Minister of
Legal Affairs and Chair of the Political Party Affairs Committee
closed the party’s offices and suspended its newspaper,
“Al-Shoura”. The minister cited the attack on the UPFP’s
headquarters, which he asserted was the result of factional
differences within the party, as justification for his action. A
Sanaa court later ruled that the suspension was illegal and
ordered that the paper be permitted to reopen. However,
authorities have not complied with the court’s ruling.
