(MFWA/IFEX) – The Liberian Football Association (LFA) on 9 April 2007 suspended its secretary general, Napoleon Japloe for one month for assaulting Julu Johnson, sports editor of the independent Monrovia-based the “News” newspaper.
According to the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) correspondent, the LFA took the decision following calls by members of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) for punitive action to be taken against the football official. An official of SWAL, Numennie Williams who witnessed the attack on 31 March 2007 condemned it and vowed to ensure that the matter was investigated and the LFA official dealt with.
Japloe attacked Johnson for allegedly writing an “erroneous” article about him. The incident occurred at the headquarters of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Monrovia.
