(IPYS/IFEX)- On 27 October 1998, IPYS reported that on 24 October leaders of
the National Federation of Newpaper, Magazine and Lottery Sellers (the
Federacion Nacional de Vendedores de Diarios, Revistas y Loterías del Perú,
FENDENVRELP) threatened and coerced Lima’s young newspaper hawkers into not
selling the dailies “La República”, “El Popular” and “Libero”. All three
newspapers are printed by the Companía Impresora Peruana S. A printing
house.
In a 26 October editorial, the daily “El Comercio” claims it is no
coincidence this sudden attempt to silence the papers occurred on the very
day media were expected to report extensively on the results of peace
negotiations with Ecuador. In the same column, “El Comercio” says one cannot
help view two bills proposed in Congress — one on granting benefits to the
hawkers and one on the children’s rights — in the context of these
incidents. The bills would, in a subtle and camouflaged way, affect freedom
of expression and press freedom.
