(CMFR/IFEX) – A former broadcaster who became a politician was killed at around noon (local time) on 6 December 2004, in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, southern Philippines. She suffered three bullet wounds from a .45 calibre pistol.
Amy Corpuz had worked for some time as a reporter for DXOM in Koronadal City. She was a councillor for Lambayong town, in Sultan Kudarat, from 1998 to May 2004.
John Paul Jubelag, managing editor of the local “Mindanao Times” newspaper, told CMFR that, according to police, Corpuz was about to disembark from a tricycle (a local mode of transport) in front of a boarding house along Ledesma Street when she was shot from behind by two motorcycle-riding men.
DXOM’s station manager, Dennis Panganiban, told CMFR that after Corpuz went into politics, she was still occasionally asked to report on Tacurong and Lambayong.
Jubelag said police have not established a motive for her killing, nor do they have a suspect. Jubelag and Panganiban mentioned, however, that Corpuz had a complaint pending before the Commission on Elections. She ran for provincial office in elections held in May.
