(MISA/IFEX) – On 1 March 2000, the former deputy minister of finance, Fred Nseula, and an accomplice, Aaron Sakala, were arrested following an alleged plot to bomb the state-owned radio station of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
According to the PANA news agency, police spokesperson Oliver Soko said the two men were being charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and will appear in court in the week of 6 March.
In a reconstruction of the plot by police investigators, Soko revealed to PANA that Sakala had planned to go to MBC’s head office at an appointed date, ostensibly to buy air time for a programme. While in the building, Sakala would plant a bomb. Meanwhile, Nseula would telephone the MBC director general to warn him of the bomb, while at the same time, Sakala would throw a fire-cracker to scare off occupants in the broadcasting house.
PANA reported scepticism as to whether the alleged plot was genuine or a publicity stunt for Nseula’s political career.
