(MFWA/IFEX) – On 19 March 2009, The Brikama Magistrate Court released on bail Halifa Sallah, publisher of the pro-opposition “Foroyaa Newspaper”. Sallah was detained for about two weeks on three criminal charges, including “sedition” and “spying”.
Media Foundation for West Africa’s (MFWA) sources report that Sallah’s release follows an application by state prosecutor R. N. Chenge to withdraw all charges against Sallah “in the interest of peace and justice.”
However, to the consternation of the audience, Chenge introduced a new charge sheet, bringing two more charges against the journalist.
Sallah, a member of the editorial board of “Foroyaa Newspaper”, was arrested at his home on 8 March and detained for three days before being granted bail on strict and absurd conditions. When Sallah could not meet the conditions, his counsel filed an appeal in a Banjul High Court challenging the court’s demands.
