(FNJ/IFEX) – Four journalists, including FNJ’s Terhathum chapter treasurer Chatra Rimal and central FNJ representative Uddhav Timilsina, were arrested on 12 April 2006 in Myanglung, district headquarters of the eastern district Terhathum.
They were arrested while reporting news on a peaceful demonstration organized by the Seven Party Alliance (SPA).
Saptakoshi FM radio station correspondent Bharat Ingnam and “Hank Weekly” newspaper correspondent Rajendra Baral were also among the arrested.
Journalist Krishna Yogi was severely beaten by the police on the evening of 11 April in Myanglung, while he was reporting on a candlelight rally organized by the SPA. He suffered severe injuries to his head and wrist.
In a separate development, journalists arrested at 12 April protest rallies in Kathmandu and Pokhara were released on the evening of the same day.
The FNJ issued a press statement condemning the continuous arrests and attacks on journalists. It has also asked the government to immediately release the arrested journalists.
