Journalist Ayşemden Akın was threatened in Turkish occupied Northern Cyprus after she published a story about government corruption. Her main source for the story, Cemil Önal, was murdered in the Netherlands.
The proposed amendment, which criminalises “fake news” and carries penalties of up to five years in prison, risks stifling independent journalism and encouraging self-censorship.
A recent report shows that France, Italy, Malta, Greece, Cyprus, Sweden, and Finland want to legalise spying on journalists in the event of a threat to national security.
