Lawyers for an Icelandic Interior Ministry official are requesting prison time for two journalists who erroneously identified the official as a target in a police investigation into a government leak.
“The overbroad application of defamation laws, as in these two cases, does not just affect those journalists directly involved, but can cast a chilling effect over colleagues who may fear similar consequences,” said IPI Press Freedom Adviser Scott Griffen.
Parliament unanimously approved the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative resolution that calls on government to draft legislation for the protection of media, journalists and bloggers.
