Freedom of the Press 2007: Poland

A recent resolution will allow top Israeli officials to attend events in Poland commemorating Auschwitz’s liberation. This could include welcoming Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the ICC for crimes against humanity.

González was arrested in February 2022 while covering the humanitarian crisis on the Polish-Ukrainian border shortly after Russia’s invasion. He is accused of espionage and is the only journalist behind bars in the EU.

PiS’s defeat does not diminish the threat of media capture – particularly in countries where smaller markets can leave media more vulnerable to state pressure – and must not distract European policy makers from building the necessary safeguards.
