The orders targeting those who criticise the handling of death penalty cases have the broader effect of curtailing the right to freedom of expression.
The Committee to Protect Journalists said that authorities must cease using the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act to muzzle and discredit journalists.
In 2019, “The Online Citizen” published allegations made by the siblings of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. In response, the prime minister sued the independent news website for defamation and not his siblings.
