(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Tunisian Prime Minister Hamed Karaoui, RSF has
protested the suspension of distribution of the French daily “Le Monde”, in
Tunisia. RSF asked the prime minister to “lift this restrictive measure” and
to “allow the free flow of information, as guaranteed by the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Tunisia.” The
organisation recalled that from January to June 1999, fourteen issues of the
daily were barred from distribution in Tunisia.
According to the information gathered by RSF, the newspaper has not been
distributed in Tunisia since 21 October. On 27 October, RSF protested the
suspension of France 2, whose broadcasts had been interrupted since 25
October (see IFEX alert of 27 October 1999). These measures follow
particularly critical coverage by these media.
