(CPJ/IFEX) – Prominent radio talk show host and political commentator Albert
Cheng, who was brutally assaulted on 19 August 1998, is now in “very stable
and satisfactory condition,” according to his doctors at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital. At about 6h30, two unidentified men attacked Cheng with a meat
cleaver, slashing him repeatedly in the parking lot of Commercial Radio
Station, where he works. Cheng sustained severe injuries, including
suffering at least six deep cuts along his back, legs, and one hand, and
spent about six hours in surgery as doctors reconnected muscle, bone, and
nerve tissue.
CPJ says there is widespread suspicion among the press in Hong Kong that
Cheng was targeted for his work as the outspoken host of the popular and
influential radio program, “Teacup in a Storm.” The “Hong Kong Standard”
declared that if “this dastardly attack was a warning to him to desist from
critical remarks or to be more circumspect in what he says on the radio,
then all those who respect media freedom will condemn it and rise to the
defense of journalistic freedom.”
