(RSF/IFEX) – The following provides further information to the alert of 31
August. According to RSF’s information, on 30 August, Shaiful Alam Mukul,
editor of “Dainik Runner” (or “Daily Runner”), was shot dead by unknown
assaillants as he was coming back home on his three-wheeler rickshaw. The
journalist was immediately taken to
Jessore hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police have not yet
arrested any suspects.
“Dainik Runner” is very well-known for its criticism of the Bangladeshi
political class, its radical investigation of corruption and its weekly
page on human rights issues. Shaiful Alam Mukul faced several trials in the
past because of articles published in his newspaper. His father, the
newspaper’s founder, was arrested by the deposed junta and died in custody
in 1983 after being tortured to death.
