(PROBIDAD/IFEX) – Honduran authorities have apprehended two suspects in the December 2006 murder of human rights lawyer Dionisio Díaz García, who worked for the Tegucigalpa-based Association for a More Just Society (Asociación por una Sociedad Más Justa, ASJ).
The suspects, accused by the Public Ministry (Ministerio Público) of shooting Díaz García to death, are César Daniel Amador, an agent working at the headquarters of the Ministry of Security’s criminal investigations unit (Dirección General de Investigación Criminal, DGIC), and Ramón Eusebio Solís, the employee of a private security company.
The Public Ministry announced that Amador was apprehended in Tegucigalpa and Solís in La Ceiba, a town located on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, by a special investigations team comprised of DGIC agents and Public Ministry prosecutors.
The special prosecutor for human rights, Sandra Ponce, confirmed that the two are believed to be responsible for the murder of Díaz García and that their case is being brought to court in Tegucigalpa.
Díaz García was killed on 4 December 2006 by two men who opened fire upon him as he drove along a major boulevard of the capital. The lawyer was providing legal support to the ASJ, which, days before his murder, had publicly denounced a private security company for violating the rights of its workers (for further information on the harassment of ASJ journalists for breaking the story, see IFEX alerts of 19, 12 and 6 December 2006, and others).
