(IPYS/IFEX) – At 6 p.m. (local time) on 17 November 1998, IPYS received a
phone call from journalist Romulo Ripa Casafranca, who through IPYS a few
days earlier had reported an attack on his office (see IFEX alert.) Ripa
said that, because he reported the attack, two journalists that work with
him at Radio Panorama — Alipio Cancho Aldana and Carlos Arévalo — are now
being threatened. The station also received warning of a bomb threat
against the building of the company which owns the station, Radio Difusora
Sudamericana. Ripa told IPYS the threats were coming from a group calling
itself the “Annihilating Red Path” (“Sendero Rojo Aniquilador.”)
**Updates IFEX alert of 17 November 1998**
Ripa became aware of this latest information when he, Cancho Aldana and
Arévalo were in the Andahuaylas Ombudsman’s Office. They went to give the
local Ombudsman’s Office a copy of the complaint they filed with the Crime
Prevention division of the Andahuaylas Provincial Prosecutor’s Office
against Andahuaylas district head Vicente Zegarra Suarez; the journalists
say Zegarra is responsible for the threats. The complaint also includes
other civil servants who they say might be linked to illegal activities
against them and against the Andahuaylas district administration.
The journalists told IPYS that, according to the reliable sources of the
news programme “Andahuaylas en la Noticia” (“Andahuaylas in the News,”)
Zegarra and a group of civil servants are reportedly preparing the ground
to accuse the journalists of a series of bomb attacks on Andahuaylas
district administration buildings.
