(FMM/IFEX) – The following is an 18 October 2004 FMM press release:
Grenade attack on television station
An unidentified person rode his motorbike onto the premises of Swarnavahini television station in Colombo and lobbed a hand grenade at around midnight on Sunday 17 October. Swarnavahini TV is situated alongside the busy Galle Road, Colombo 02. Nobody was hurt in the attack and the explosion caused minor damages only.
Free Media Movement (FMM) condemns this dastardly act. Media institutions that disseminate different ideas and opinions broaden freedom of expression by contributing to pluralism in media. Advocating a monolithic or state media culture only is anti-democratic and goes against basic fundamental rights.
FMM views this attack as an attempt to subjugate private sector media and to suppress pluralism in media.
FMM calls on the government to inquire into this attack and to bring the culprits to book. At the same time, FMM calls upon all democratic forces to condemn this attack.
