(HKJA/IFEX) – The following is a 3 June 1999 HKJA press release:
HKJA Demands the Chinese Government Respect Press Freedom
At the 10th anniversary of June 4th, the Hong Kong Journalists Association
urges the Chinese Government to respect press freedom and freedom of
expression, and to abandon the mistake of penalising expressions of opinion.
One of the demands of the Tiananmen pro-democracy movement was press
freedom. Ten years ago, many mainland journalists took to the street and
expressed their unwillingness to continue to tell lies.
Over the past decade, even though the mainland has become more open in
certain areas, it still lacks press freedom and continues to suppress those
who express their views peacefully.
The HKJA solemnly requests Beijing to actually respect freedom of expression
and implement Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
“Everyone has
the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom
to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart
information and ideas
through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
