(HRinfo/IFEX) – HRinfo welcomed the 13 August 2006 decision of “Al-Ahram” newspaper to stop filtering its staff’s access to websites, which it had begun doing a few days prior. The measure prevented the newspaper’s staff from accessing any blog associated with Google, which administers nearly 80 percent of all Egyptian blogs.
On 8 August, HRinfo called upon “Al-Ahram” to end its blocking of some websites from staff access, especially blogs associated with http://www.blogger.com and http://www.manalaa.net , considering such filtering to be a violation of freedom of expression and of the right to exchange information.
Following the positive response of “Al-Ahram”, HRinfo hopes that the Egyptian government will make a similar decision and stop blocking the websites of the “Al-Shaab” newspaper ( http://www.alshaab.com ), the Save Egypt Front ( http://www.saveegyptfront.org ), and the Al-Amal (labour) party ( http://www.el3amal.net ).
