(IPYS/IFEX) – For the past while, Augusto Llanos Nurena, editor-in-chief of
“El Regional”, a daily distributed in the cities of Huanuco, Cerro de Pasco
and Ucayali, has been receiving threats aimed at stopping him from reporting
on alleged irregularities in the Huanuco local administration.
As background, Felipe Paucar, IPYS’s correspondent in Huanuco, explains that
the journalist, a former local civil servant, made a claim for unpaid
benefits along with several other former municipal employees. LLanos told
IPYS’s correspondent that he has been receiving telephone threats because of
this claim and because of his paper’s reports of irregularities committed in
local government. He believes the threats are aimed at preventing him from
publishing any stories on municipal affairs. Llanos also said that, since
this is not the first time he has been harassed, he fears for his life. He
believes individuals linked to Huanuco mayor Luzmila Templo are responsible
for the threats and harassment.
