(IPYS/IFEX) – On 10 November 1999, at approximately 3:00 p.m. (local time),
journalist Angel Durán Leon was shot on the road to the province of Aija
(located two hours from Huaraz), by the Huancapeti hill. Durán is a reporter
with Radio Quassar in Huaraz, Ancash department, in Peru’s northern
mountainous region. At the time, he was on his way to interview Aija Mayor
Germán Hizo Requena.
**Updates IFEX alerts of 28 October and 16 September 1999**
According to the journalist, the incident occurred when he and the vehicle’s
driver, Cesar Romero Huaman, came across some stones on the road. When they
got out of the car to remove the stones, they heard shots. Durán managed to
spot a hooded individual at a distance of approximately twenty metres. The
doctor who treated Durán stated that the bullet went through the journalist’
s right thigh, and that he was out of danger.
On 17 September, the office of the ombudsman asked the prefect of the Ancash
department, Walter Juan Vásquez Cruz, to assure Durán’s safety. A formal
request was made on 20 September, but to date the office of the ombudsman
has not received a response.
