(IFJ/IFEX) – The director of the Huaraz newspaper “Ya”, Pedro Maguina
Calderon, denounced the fact that two persons broke into the editorial
offices of the daily, destroyed the door and windows and forced him to stop
the presses for an hour and a half. He stated that the criminals even came
up to the premises’ second floor, where his family resides, in order to
threaten them.
**For previous harassment of Maguino see IFEX alert of 24 June 1997**
The police managed to capture the assailants, who have been identified as

chief of security for the Egenor company of the Canon del Pato central
hydroelectric plant. It is not known what position the other individual
holds.
According to Maguina, the attack is a result of the daily’s campaign against
defects in the electrical energy service that is provided by the Egenor
company.
The assailants are being held in the State Security premises. The provincial
public prosecutor will begin investigations on 13 April 1999.
