To coincide with COP28, IFEX launched a new iteration of its Civic Space Campaign to underscore the vital connection between a thriving civic space and the pursuit of climate justice.
In particular, the campaign highlighted the critical role of freedom of expression and information in the fight against climate change. It focused on three key areas: the importance of environmental information, the protection of environmental activists and the right to protest, and the challenges of misinformation/disinformation.
During COP28 in November and December 2023, IFEX shared a series of visuals designed for the occasion on its social media channels. IFEX also promoted a submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment, which highlighted cases where network members have acted to resist state and corporate persecution of journalists and defenders, and to address the resulting information vacuum critical to environmental democracy.
This campaign was also featured on World Press Freedom Day in May 2024, underscoring the role of independent media in the fight for the planet and showcasing the efforts of IFEX members worldwide in addressing climate challenges by supporting investigative journalists and defending information integrity.
