(IFJ/IFEX) – In a 24 July 2000 letter to Peter Lerner of the Israeli Command, the IFJ
expressed its concern about the recent attacks on Palestinian journalists in Hebron by armed settlers, apparently assisted by Israeli soldiers.
According to the IFJ’s information, the following journalists were injured: Hussam Abu Allan, Amer Al Ja’bari, Nasser AlShuyoukhi, Mazen Da’ana, Kauther Sallam and Naji Da’ana. The settlers also attacked the staff of Abu Dhabi TV, who were in Hebron at the time, and journalists from foreign agencies, including a Reuters cameraman.
The IFJ-affiliated Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate has asked journalists’ unions throughout the world to demand stronger action by the Israeli authorities to stop these inhuman acts forthwith and to refrain from denying Palestinian journalists the right to do their jobs.
The Executive Committee of the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate called a day of protest on Wednesday 19 July at noon (local time), outside the Israeli Military Headquarters in Hebron. The Syndicate appealed to all its members and supporters of free speech and press freedom to join them in a peaceful protest.
This is the second serious incident involving injuries to journalists in the last two months.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the Israeli Command:
– asking them to investigate these attacks and to hold those responsible accountable
– also asking them to recognise that journalists and media working in difficult conditions are simply carrying out their professional duties and should be given assistance and protection to do so without harassment
– noting that this is the second serious incident involving injuries to journalists in the last two months
