(IFJ/IFEX) – IFJ is expressing shock at the violence against journalists
covering the
recent demonstrations in Jakarta. According to IFJ’s information, Dadang Rhs
of “DeTAK”, Cosmas Gramiarto of “Indosiar”, and Yasmin Muntasa of “Anteve”
were all attacked by security personnel whilst covering the clashes between
students and the military at the Atma Jaya Catholic University campus. Some
of these journalists required hospital treatment following the assaults.
**Updates IFEX alerts of 11 November and 4 November 1998**
These acts were the latest in attacks against journalists who are exercising
their profession. Commander Wiranto of the Armed Forces had only just
apologised for assaults on journalists which occurred two days previously
when these latest attacks took place.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the President:
genuinely sorry for assaults on journalists and whether he has instructed
his personnel not to engage in such activities in the future
of expression and an attempt to ensure that the actions of the armed forces
against the students were not publicised in Indonesia
profession, including covering demonstrations, and that the officers
responsible for the recent incidents are held to account
