(WiPC/IFEX) – The WiPC of International PEN is deeply concerned about reports of the denial of medical treatment to Akbar Ganji, a noted journalist imprisoned since April 2000.
According to reports received by the WiPC, Ganji went on hunger strike on 19 May 2005 in protest at his treatment by the authorities. He has been denied urgently needed medical treatment and has been prohibited from contacting his family by phone since September 2000. According to credible reports, he has been suffering from asthma, backache, failing eyesight and a persistent cough. Despite being recommended for medical treatment by a number of specialists, the Prosecutor’s Office has refused to grant the requisite permission.
