(JED/IFEX) – The following is an abridged version of a 17 June 2004 JED letter to the director of Kinshasa’s Central Penitentiary and Reeducation Centre:
Kinshasa, 17 June 2004
Attention: Director, Central Penitentiary and Reeducation Centre of Kinshasa (CPRK)
KINSHASA/SELEMBAO
Dear Sir,
Re: Appeal for an imprisoned journalist
Journaliste en danger (JED) an independent, nonprofit organisation that works to promote press freedom, and also serves as the alerts network of the Central African Media Organisation (Organisation des médias d’Afrique centrale, OMAC) is writing to express its serious concern over the declining health of journalist Albert Kassa Khamy Mouya, currently detained at the Central Penitentiary and Reeducation Centre of Kinshasa (CPRK), of which you are director.
As you are aware, Mr. Mouya is a diabetic and requires a special diet and regular medical attention. It appears that since his incarceration Mr. Mouya has not been seen by a doctor nor had access to his medication. In a 14 June visit by JED with Mr. Mouya, he appeared to be seriously weakened and drained by his illness.
JED appeals to your sense of duty and humanity to grant Mr. Mouya an immediate transfer to an appropriate medical facility where he can receive the treatment he needs.
Yours sincerely,
Tshivis Tshivuadi
Secretary general
