(RSF/IFEX) – On 22 December 1997, Hasan Hasanov, Minister of
Foreign Affairs, allegedly described a Turan news agency report
on his speech delivered at an OSCE meeting in Copenhagen as
“anti-governmental” in nature. The speech in question dealt with
the Karabakh conflict.
According to Mr. Hasanov, the independent agency is “engaged in
active anti-Azerbaijan propaganda.” On 28 December, during a
press conference, the minister repeated that the news agency had
provided false information concerning the OSCE meeting in
Copenhagen.
On 23 December, Tofik Zulgurov, deputy Minister of Foreign
Affairs, threatened to apply sanctions against the agency. He
said that Turan journalists would not be allowed to question
Ministry employees or enter the Ministry building.
