Human Rights Watch is concerned at reports that several lawyers
and administrators from the Istanbul Branch of the Human Rights
Association of Turkey (HRA) as well as families of prisoners were
detained on 7 June 1996, while trying to send a telegram dealing
with prison conditions and reform to the Minister of Justice. The
incident occurred at the main post office in Sirkeci, Istanbul, at
12:00 hours. Among the detained are Ercan Kanar, Zeynep Baran,
Suna Aras, and Ayhan Erkal, all members or administrators of the
Istanbul branch of the HRA, and Mustafa Ucdere, head of the
Istanbul branch of the Contemporary Lawyers Association.
The detentions occurred while Turkey was hosting Habitat II, a
major international conference on the environment.
