The Indonesian government has banned the book, “Bayang Bayang
PKI” (“In the Shadows of the PKI”), which is published by the
Institute for Studies on the Free Flow of Information (ISAI). The
book is about the violent political turbulence that occurred in
Indonesia in 1965-66 which led to the assumption of power by
current President General Suharto.
The banning means that it has now been made a criminal offence in
Indonesia for any person to possess, publish, distribute, trade
or reprint “Bayang Bayang PKI”.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
imposed on “Bayang Bayang PKI”
the right to freedom of expression and opinion enshrined in
Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, which Indonesia, as a member state of the UN, is obliged
to respect
bannings, which appear designed to prevent public scrutiny of,
and debate about, a key period of modern Indonesian history, one
in which gross and systematic abuses of human rights were
committed
