(IPYS/IFEX) – According to IPYS, on 28 May 1998, members of the National Tax
Supervision Administration (state agency in charge of tax collection) went
to the home of journalist Jose Arrieta’s wife looking for accounting
documents and income statements from an alleged company belonging to
Arrieta, who has already been charged twice with tax evasion. Arrieta, who
felt obliged to leave Peru in January 1998, does not own and has never
owned any company. This action therefore reflects, yet again, the use of the
tax collection office to initiate proceedings to persecute and imprison
opponants of the government.
**For background see IFEX alerts of 12 February and 7 January 1998, and 17
December 1997**
On 28 May 1998, Arrieta’s wife was being pressured in her home by government
tax agents to sign documents related to the accusation. IPYS was able to
contact Arrieta’s wife by telephone and took various measures to go to the
home to confirm the situation.
