On 15 September 1996, unknown individuals opened fire on the home
of the parents of Vladimir Jara, a journalist with the daily “ABC
Color”. The previous day, Jara’s wife had received telephoned
death threats. As well, on 10 September, unidentified individuals
made their way into Jara’s house, searching through it and
marking up pictures of Jara and his wife with an “X”.

These incidents followed the publication in “ABC Color” of
articles by Jara about alleged corruption involving members of
the National Police.
An investigation was subsequently opened, while the head of the
National Police, Mario Sapriza Nunes, offered assurances of the
journalist’s safety.
