Journalist Killed in Bangladesh
IPI Urges Government to Seriously Address Continued Impunity in
Attacks on Journalists
VIENNA, June 19, 2012 — The International Press Institute (IPI)
today strongly condemned the murder of Jamal Uddin, a journalist with
the Bengali-language daily newspaper Gramer Kagoj.
According to local news reports, Uddin was attacked by unidentifiable
assailants with sharp weapons at a tea stall in the Jessore district,
south-western Bangladesh, at 11 pm. on June 15. Local residents rushed
the journalist to the Jessore Medical College Hospital where he was
pronounced dead at approximately 11:30 pm.
While the motive behind Uddin’s murder remains unclear, local
newspapers and international media suggest that Uddin’s death is in
response to his reporting on local drug operations. According to the
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Uddin received several
death threats from local drug dealers prior to the attack.

Turkey Releases Another Journalist
Proceedings in ‘Oda TV’ Case Resume, But Still No Report on Key Evidence

ISTANBUL, June 19, 2012 – The International Press Institute (IPI) today welcomed the release of another journalist from prison in Turkey and urged the country to free the rest of the nearly 100 journalists it currently holds behind bars, the vast majority of whom have been convicted of no crime. A court in Istanbul late yesterday afternoon ordered the release of Muyesser Yildiz – who had been imprisoned for 16 months – following the resumption of proceedings in the “Oda TV trial” after a three-month pause. The case is named for a news website that has been fiercely critical of the government. Prosecutors say was at the centre of a purported effort to use the media to advance the alleged “Ergenekon” plot to use terrorism to sow chaos that would lead elements of the military and security services to stage a coup against Turkey’s current Justice and Development Party (AKP)-led government. Ethiopia Clampdown on Internet Freedoms Tightens as Verdict for Jailed Journalist Approaches
Verdict in Eskinder Nega’s ‘Terrorism’ Trial Expected This Week
VIENNA, June 19, 2012 – A new law in Ethiopia, ratified on May 24, 2012,
will criminalise the use of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP)
communications, such as Skype, Viber and GTalk. “IPI is gravely
concerned at this development, which appears to be yet another move by
the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to control the free flow
of information,” IPI Deputy Director Anthony Mills said. Together with the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation of 2009 ,
which punishes the ‘encouragement’ of terrorism with up to 20 years in
prison and gives security services the right to conduct warrantless
surveillance of communications, the new law obliges Ethiopian
journalists and their sources to operate under increasingly restrictive
circumstances.
