(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Israeli Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Ehud Barak, RSF protested Israeli soldiers’ shooting at Lebanese journalists on the Israeli-Lebanese border. The organisation called on the prime minister to “ensure that an inquiry is immediately opened and the people responsible for this shooting are punished”. “This act is very worrying because it’s the second time in one month that such an incident has occured,” added Robert Ménard, RSF’s secretary-general.
According to information obtained by RSF, on 22 September 2000, Israeli soldiers shot at Lebanese journalists on the Lebanese border. Taher Abou Hamdane, a journalist with Agence France-Presse, explained that “the Israeli soldiers shot at [their] legs without any warning.” On 12 September, Israeli soldiers shot in the air, apparently to frighten three Lebanese journalists who were taking pictures at the border.
