(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to King Mohammed VI, RSF protested the distribution ban imposed on the French weekly “Le Canard enchaîné”. RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard asked the king to “reconsider this decision, which demonstrates once again the authorities’ eagerness to censor foreign newspapers whose articles criticise the monarchy.” Six foreign publications have been censored since the beginning of the year.
According to information collected by RSF, the 31 October 2001 issue of the French weekly “Le Canard enchaîné” has been held back by the distributor, Sochepresse, since the evening of 31 October. The issue includes an article titled “His Majetski M6”, which comments on Jean-Pierre Tuquoi’s most recent book about Morocco, “The Last King” (published by Grasset). The journalist notably wrote, “After a two and a half year reign, his son has not done very much, except restrain the press, yield to the Islamists on women’s rights, manage his immense fortune and play sports….”
