(PPF/IFEX) – According to the PPF’s information, on 15 September 1998,
Pervaiz ul Hassan, a journalist working in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, was
arrested after reporting on corruption in the local police force and civil
administration. The Central Union of Journalists (CUJ) called the arrest an
attack on freedom of the press. In an emergency meeting, Saadat Khan,
vice-president of the CUJ, said the arrest was made on the insistence of the
civil administration and was baseless. The CUJ has threatened to launch a
protest at the district, divisional and state levels of government until its
demands are addressed. It has also called for a boycott of press coverage on
all government functions.
