(WiPC/IFEX) – The WiPC of International PEN is heartened by the news of the release of Abdallah Zouari on 6 November 2002 following a court hearing. Zouari’s lawyers have been unable to ascertain further details of the court’s decision.
The journalist from the banned “al-Fajir” newspaper was imprisoned on 19 August for refusing to move from his home in Tunis to a town in the south of Tunisia, a condition of his release from prison in June. Zouari had spent 11 years in jail for his membership in a banned organisation, the Ennahda Islamic Movement, and for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government of Tunisian President Zine al Abidine Ben Ali.
