(CEHURDES/IFEX) – CEHURDES is concerned about the safety of journalist Som Sharma. Sharma was abducted by an armed group of Maoist insurgents from his rented apartment at Mangalbare bazaar, in the eastern district of Ilam, sometime during the week of 9 May 2005.
Sharma was previously a reporter for the Ilam-based weekly “Aankha” (“The Eye”), among other local newspapers. The journalist’s whereabouts remain unknown.
CEHURDES calls on the Maoist insurgents to reveal Sharma’s whereabouts and to release him immediately and unharmed. Journalists are globally accepted as human rights defenders and CEHURDES further urges the rebels to not target media personnel on the basis of their work.
CEHURDES also calls upon the government to determine Sharma’s whereabouts and ensure his safe release.
