Amiel Nkuliza (not Nkuriza, as previously reported), director of
the privately-owned newspaper “Intego” and editor-in chief of the
independent newspaper “Le Partisan”, has been released. Although
the date of his release could not be specified, it reportedly
occurred on 13 August 1996.
**Updates IFEX alert dated 9 August 1996**
Background Information
According to an alert originated by the Committee to Protect
Journalists (CPJ), Nkuliza was arrested on 6 August by officers
of the security forces, and had reportedly been held at the
information services department. Although no formal charges were
made against him, the arrest occurred after authorities seized
the latest issue of “Intego” in July and prohibited publication
of future issues until further notice. It was believed that those
moves were prompted by an article in the seized issue which was
critical of the government (see IFEX alert).
