Rais was among six “Reformasi” (“Reform”) activists to be sentenced under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in June 2001. He was released from Kamunting Detention Centre on 1 June 2003, but was initially transferred to Taiping prison to await bail hearings on several outstanding charges, including illegal assembly. He was eventually freed on 4 June.
