(IFJ/IFEX) – The IFJ is concerned about the recent arrest of Langre
Arogundade. According to the IFJ’s information, Arogundade, Chairman of
the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) was
arrested at his home early on the morning of 11 February 1999.
No reason, other than the existence of “a petition” was given for his
arrest. He has since been released.
The IFJ believes that Arogundade was arrested as a result of his work
within the NUJ, in particular in relation to press freedom. The
organisation is particularly worried that his arrest came at a time when
Arogundade had been receiving death threats as a result of his NUJ
activities.
