(CPJ/IFEX) – On 3 November 1998, Gustave Kalenga, editor of the independent
newspaper “La Flamme du Congo,” was arrested by ANR security agents.
The arrest is believed to be in connection with an article published in the
20 October 1998 edition of the newspaper, criticising Cabinet Director of
the Chief of State Abdoulaye Yerodia. That same day, soldiers and security
agents were posted in front of the offices of “La Flamme du Congo” to arrest
Kalenga, who had gone into hiding when he received information about the
pending arrest. “La Flamme du Congo” ceased publishing on the same date.
