(RSF/IFEX) – On 10 January 1998, Sylvanus Kanyako, a journalist with the
private newspaper “Herald Guardian” was allegedly arrested. This arrest is
thought to be connected to an article published the day before which urged
parents not to send their children to school due to the insecurity in the
country. The authorities gave no reason for the arrest and Kanyako’s place
of detention remains unknown.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to authorities:
that “detention, as punishment for the peaceful expression of an opinion, is
one of the most reprehensible ways to enjoin silence and, as a consequence,
a grave violation of human rights”.
