(CEHURDES/IFEX) – On 3 December 2003, the security forces arrested Bhai Kaji Ghimire, managing director of “Samadristi” monthly magazine, based in Kalimati, Kathmandu. The incident occurred while Ghimire was heading to work on his motorcycle. According to a statement issued by his wife, Pumpha Ghimire, the journalist’s whereabouts remain unknown.
In a separate incident, on 7 December, two unknown assailants attacked journalist Kailash Pradhan, editor of “Nepal Jagaran” weekly, in Kamalpokahari, Kathmandu. According to news reports, he was severely beaten and suffered injuries to his ear and neck. Pradhan is also a member of the Nepal Editors’ Society.
CEHURDES condemns Ghimire’s arrest and calls on the authorities to immediately disclose the whereabouts of all arrested journalists. CEHURDES further urges the authorities to respect basic standards of press freedom, freedom of expression and the fundamental rights of citizens.
