(MISA/IFEX) – “Daily Times” sports reporter Pilirani Kachinziri was
assaulted on 22 May 1999 by a Telcom Wanderers Football team fan for
allegedly writing negative
stories about Wanderers official Jack Kamwendo and National team coach Jack
Chamangwana.
A report in the “Daily Times” said that Kachinziri was attacked at half-time
during the Cosafa Castle Cup match between Malawi and Namibia.
“Daily Times” editor Raken Nyekanyeka told MISA that a man approached
Kachinziri apparently with the aim of hitting him with a bottle. However,
several people sheltered the journalist, preventing any serious injury. At
the same time, several other people joined in the fray and verbally
threatened Kachinziri, warning him not to write negative reports about the
coach.
