(MISA/IFEX) – On 13 July 1999, a journalist working for the Maputo daily
“Noticias”,
Felisberto Arnaca, reported that he was “physically attacked” by a
parliamentary official, Valgy Tricamugy. The incident happened in the Maputo
City Hall, while Arnaca was covering a special meeting of the Parliamentary
Forum of the Portuguese Speaking Countries. Tricamugy is employed in the
office of the secretariat of Parliament.
According to MISA sources, Tricamugy accused the journalist of having
entered his office and having stolen a document that was given to him by a
member of the Angolan delegation. The document contained information about
the situation in Angola. Arnaca says, however, that the document was given
to him by the Angolans.
The matter was reported to the police, the National Union of Journalists
(SNJ), the High Council of Communication, the Information Office and the
Secretariat of the Mozambican Parliament. However, Arnaca did not lay any
charges with the police. The journalist was slightly injured in the
incident, but no further details are available.
