(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Minister of Justice Lemrabot Sidi Mahmoud Ould Cheikh Ahmed, RSF expressed its concern about the recent assault on Ely Ould Nafa, editor of the weekly “L’Opinion libre”. RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard asked the minister to “keep the organisation informed of the results of the inquiry which was launched the same day.” Moreover, RSF recalled that seven newspapers have been seized or banned in Mauritania since the beginning of the year.
According to information received by RSF, on 6 November 2000, Ely Ould Nafa was assaulted in front of his home by unidentified persons carrying clubs. The journalist, who was taken to hospital, suffered “a fractured right arm and severe bruises to his left forearm and scalp”. Criminal Investigation Department officers arrested one of the two attackers that very evening. The motive for the attack is unknown.
