(PPF/IFEX) – On 14 September 2004, journalist Allah Waraio Bozdwar and his computer operator were attacked by four armed men at the journalist’s office in the rural area of Ghotki, Pakistan.
According to reports, two days earlier, Waraio Bozdwar had an argument with police officer Niaz Chandio. As a result, Chandio went to Waraio Bozdwar’s office with four armed men and assaulted the journalist. Waraio Bozdwar and his computer operator, Nasir Sheikh, were both injured in the attack.
Pervaiz Abro, president of the Ghalib Latif Press Club, Sukkur, stated that the attack on Waraio was a result of his reporting on police corruption in Ghotki.
Journalists in Sukkur held demonstrations to protest the attack and met with Ghotki District Police Officer Aftab Halepoto to demand an immediate investigation into the incident. Halepoto promised the journalists that an inquiry would be carried out and those found to be guilty would be punished within four days. Thus far, however, no action has been taken, although Halepoto has appointed an officer to conduct the investigation.
Civil society organisations and journalists have continued to protest the attack.
