(MFWA/IFEX) – On 13 September 2007, Asana Gordon, central regional correspondent of the Accra-based privately owned daily newspaper “Daily Dispatch”, was barred from covering the Central Regional Health Service awards ceremony to honour stakeholders in the health sector by Clarence Lartey, the public relations officer of the Central Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).
Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) sources reported that Gordon was singled out and sacked from the Cape Coast Centre for National Culture (CNC) auditorium despite the intervention of some of the programme organisers and to the astonishment of many participants.
A press release issued from the Central Regional Private Media Reporters Association (PRIMRAC) signed by its Chairman and Secretary David Allan Paintsil and Emmanuel Halm accused Clarence Lartey of constantly attacking members of the private media in the Region at functions without any provocation.
The release indicated that Lartey often mistreated private media personnel at functions organized by different institutions other than the RCC with the excuse that he had not been informed by the organizers that those media houses had been invited.
Asana Gordon was reported to have been personally invited by Justice Hafoba, the central regional training coordinator, one of the organizers of the awards ceremony.
