(RSF/IFEX) – In a letter to Interior Minister Habib el Adli, RSF protested a policeman’s assault on Mariam Fam, a journalist with the Associated Press agency, while she was covering legislative elections. RSF Secretary-General Robert Ménard asked the minister to “ensure that an inquiry is immediately opened into the incident and that those responsible are punished.” RSF noted that five journalists are currently in jail in Egypt.
According to information collected by RSF, Fam was beaten up by a policeman on 24 October 2000, in Ashmun (a town in Egypt’s Delta region). She had gone there to investigate allegations of police intimidation of voters. A policeman hit her in the face and kicked her after throwing her to the ground in the street. Other policemen who were present did not intervene. The journalist filed a complaint.
